About the photo. There is always "that guy". This is a California Quail - they're ground birds, like chickens. But there's always "that guy" that has to be different. "That guy" is identifying as a house finch (bird feeder bird). We love "that guy" doing his thing, his way. This is the "My Way" blog - I started it when I got my dx for diabetes, but there has always been a fashion/color thing going on. You'll still read about the medical piece, but far more about the color and fashion part of my life.

Seasons/Whatever/Essence/Every/Type (SWEET)

“TYPES”

A facebook group I admin for started out as a group of women who found themselves dissatisfied with the Dress Your Truth way of doing business and running the facebook groups.

At first, it was a huge bitch session...and a haven for those trying to figure out their "Type" without having it dictated to them.

After a time, women started combining what they knew about DYT and how that meshed (or didn't) with others systems (and there are a LOT) out there.

We discovered that most of what DYT taught as original...a lot of it had been published previously.  What CT (Carol Tuttle) did was gather all this information, distill it down into usable chunks, and then make it really accessible.  (notice those are all positive things)

But what a lot of us didn't like was the rigidity of DYT, so we branched out.  Some of the other systems give the same information, lets you use the information.

Here’s the big takeaway

here's the term I use...let the system describe you…and not define you.

Here's why:  in DYT every Type and secondary has a yin and yang (fashion sense) combination. If you have a yang/yin/yin/yin combo, that's the lens through which you see your outfit, it *MUST* lead with a Yang, and then the rest can be yin.

Other systems teach the yin and yang of the fashion world, but they teach that you use those yins and those yangs to put forward the impression that you need to give that day.  The same woman can use yin in a kindergarten classrsoom and Yang if she has a court appearance.  (more about yins and yangs later)

Here’s the next big takeaway –

Don’t be afraid to use the Season/Whatever/Essence/Energy/Type (SWEET) you choose that *describes* you…but don’t let that box define you.

Here’s an example.  That older lady that everybody describes as “sweet” – does she act the way she does because she’s labeled sweet, or has she earned that label because it describes her?

On the other hand, does the one everybody avoids because she’s so prickly – is it cause or effect – is she prickly because that’s what people think…or do people think that because she’s prickly.

A little while ago, a video was posted showing two different jackets and asking which the watchers thought worked best.  75% of them answered according to *their* energy and not the energy of the model.

If we use our descriptors, it gives people a bit more insight into why we present ourselves the way that we do.

I’ve put a lot of time, thought, process and well…a bit of money…to discover for myself my best “descriptors.”

  •    ·         Playful
  •     Vibrant
  •       Relaxed
  •       Elevated casual
  •        Artsy
  •   Optimistic
  •          Confident
  •         Effortless
  •      Hopeful
  •     Hometown
  •       Romantic
  •     Hippie/Boho chic
  • In "Your Color Style" -   warm/bright/medium (colors)
  • In DYT terms, Type 1, secondary 2.

Going back to my examples, must I behave relaxed, confident, and playful because that’s what the quiz said?

Or did the quiz accurately reflect me and it’s a good description?

Here’s why I think that matters:

In DYT, the Types define you.  You *must* not wear black, gold, whatever…because Type.

T1s2, you *must* lead with yang, followed by a whole lot of yin.

Admittedly, I’m one of the folks who does fall into one of the DYT categories quite nicely, but I’ve chosen to expand that horizon a lot.

But…before I began exploring outside the DYT box, I was sort of lost because letting the Type define me, I was trying to fit the box.

Learning that the words describe me, not define me…I understand why I’m attracted to somethings, but not others.  I get why I loved that sweater in the store, but never wear it.

I’ve embraced “elevated casual” because it makes sense.

The touch of “hippie chic” – oh my goodness, I am so happy that bell bottoms made it back!

Bottom line:  the proper use of labels can be a good thing.

abusus non tollit usum

(The misuse of something does not eliminate the possibility of its correct use.)
